Diode Breaks Electronics Speed Record
Jan 30, 2004 — WASHINGTON, Jan. 30 -- Engineers have fused a 1950s concept with modern semiconductor processing and design to create a diode that can move electrical current at record-breaking rates. At room temperature, the diode (a device that behaves like a valve for electricity traveling within a circuit) can transmit current equivalent to 151,000 amps per square centimeter, three times the rate of its closest competitors. (Standard home wiring carries a maximum current density of only 700 amps per square...
Optical Stimuli Control Magnetism in Novel Materials
Oct 1, 2003 — In 1886, Heinrich Hertz observed that utraviolet light, when directed at a conduction plate, caused an increase in electrical charge. Einstein later articulated this as the photoelectric effect and explained how light waves or photons exist in...
Ohio State Seeks Role in Two Major Observatories
Nov 1, 1996 — COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State University is seeking a partnership role in two major observatories, one of which will house the world's largest telescope on a single mount. The university would buy a one-eighth share in the Large Binocular...
