Terahertz Technology Is Heating Up
ZÜRICH, Aug. 5, 2019 — Researchers at ETH Zurich have reported the highest operating temperature of a quantum cascade laser, which eliminates a major barrier in the practical implementation of the technology. While not quite T-shirt temperature, the team from the Jérôme...
Directed Currents Generated at THz Frequencies Are Higher Than Current Clock Rates
BERLIN, Jan. 16, 2019 — Researchers at the Max Born Institute (MBI) generated directed electric currents at terahertz (THz) frequencies from light absorbed in semiconductor crystals. According to the researchers, this is a much higher frequency than the clock rates of...
New High-Power, Tunable THz Laser Is Slated for Space Mission
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Dec. 20, 2018 — A new terahertz (THz) laser designed by researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has demonstrated high constant power, tight beam pattern, and broad electric frequency tuning — three performance metrics that could mean less noise...
QCL, THz Frequency Combs May Become the Future of Wi-Fi
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Aug. 13, 2018 — Wi-Fi and cellular data traffic are increasing exponentially, but unless the capacity of wireless links can be increased, all that traffic is bound to lead to bottlenecks. Upcoming 5G networks are a temporary fix. Researchers are focusing on...
Enhanced Magnetic Dipole Source, Glass Fiber Tailor Radiation in THz Region
SYDNEY and ADELAIDE, Australia, Feb. 12, 2018 — Researchers have demonstrated an enhanced magnetic dipole source in the terahertz frequency range, a necessary step to harness the magnetic nature of light for terahertz devices. Collaborating scientists from the University of New South Wales, the...
THz Imaging Uncovers Secrets of 17th-Century Masterpiece
Nov 30, 2017 — There has long been an air of mystery surrounding paintings created prior to the 18th century and how the artists prepared their canvases, applied undercoats and eventually created their masterpieces. Researchers from Georgia Tech-Lorraine, a campus...
Uncharted Waters
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 4, 2017 — As the saying goes, "difficult is done at once; the impossible takes a little longer." It took Xi-Cheng Zhang, an optics professor at the University of Rochester, nearly a decade to generate a terahertz wave from water — an achievement that...
Terahertz Emitter Addresses Obstacles to Use for Noninvasive Industrial Inspections
SINGAPORE, Feb. 8, 2017 — High performance and low-power driven terahertz (THz) emitters could possibly address critical challenges facing industrial applications of this new technology. Researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) have made a major...
Breakthroughs Bring THz Spectroscopy, Sensing Closer to Mainstream
Nov 3, 2016 — The terahertz (THz) electromagnetic spectrum (1 to 10 THz), sitting between the infrared wavelengths on the higher frequency side and microwaves on the lower frequency side, has unique and important properties. THz waves can pass through a number of...
Biomedical Imaging Breakthroughs
Jun 10, 2016 — Water concentrations in human tissue, it turns out, are a good indicator of whether or not cells are cancerous. That’s led to increased interest in the emerging field of terahertz imaging, which promises delineation between healthy cells and...
