Doping Process Increases Conductivity, Transparency of Graphene
NEW YORK, Nov. 8, 2021 — An interdisciplinary team of researchers from Columbia University and Sungkyungkwan University (South Korea) has introduced a clean technique to dope graphene via a charge-transfer layer made of low-impurity tungsten oxyselenide (TOS). The team generated the new “clean” layer by oxidizing a single atomic layer of another 2D material, tungsten selenide. When team members layered TOS on top of the graphene, they found that it left the graphene riddled with electricity-conducting
In New Material, Color and Thermal Properties Can Be Tuned Separately
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., April 4, 2019 — Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have optically engineered a polymer material to allow its color and thermal properties to be tailored independently of each other. The new films simultaneously provide light weight,...
Laser Nanolithography Could Improve Nanomaterials
SINGAPORE, July 23, 2014 — Lasers can “draw” patterns on nanomaterials, a technique that shows potential for improving the functionality of electronic and optoelectronic components. Research teams at the National University of Singapore, led by professor Dr. Sow...
Lasers Control Electronic Spin
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Dec. 6, 2011 — For the first time, light has proved useful in obtaining information about the spin of electrons flowing over topological insulators — a discovery that could open up possibilities for new devices based on spintronics and magnetic data storage....
Synchrotron Imaging Shows How Folds Affect Graphene
BUFFALO, N.Y., June 30, 2011 — Synchrotron light sources have revealed electron clouds on the surface of graphene, showing how folds and ripples in the material can harm its conductivity. The research, scheduled to appear June 28 in Nature Communications, was conducted by...
Electronic Metamaterial Made
BASEL, Switzerland, July 17, 2009 -- Physicists and chemists in Switzerland defied the belief that electrical resistance of a material can't be adjusted by developing thin films with controllable electronic properties. The discovery could have a big impact on future applications in...
Profiling Potential Petroleum Production
Jan 1, 2007 — Oil often has to be coaxed out of the ground, but various conditions hinder pumping and decrease production. One problem might be that the oil cannot flow freely through the rock. One way to stimulate a well is to inject acid, which cuts channels...
