Quantum Cryptography Satellite Gets 2024 Launch Date
LUXEMBOURG, Sept. 26, 2022 — A consortium of 20 European companies led by Luxembourg-based satellite telecommunications network provider SES SA, with support from the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission, will design, develop, launch, and operate a satellite system that will enable secure quantum key distribution (QKD) based on free space optical communication technologies. The EAGLE-1 satellite-based system will be capable of in-orbit validation and seeks to usher in next-generation cybersecurity
White House Directives Target Quantum Science, Technology
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 6, 2022 — President Joe Biden this week introduced two directives that will advance national initiatives in quantum information science (QIS). The president signed an executive order that will enhance the National Quantum Initiative Advisory Committee...
Photonics Takes Aim at NewSpace Needs
Oct 28, 2019 — The NewSpace movement focuses on solutions compatible with low-orbit satellites that can provide new applications in the areas of telecommunications and sensing. NewSpace is mainly being driven by innovative launcher, satellite, and technology...
Satellite Mission Tests Quantum Light Source
SINGAPORE, July 11, 2016 — A technology that carries a quantum light source into space may be able to preserve the quantum properties of light as it travels through an optical link from space to Earth. It could provide the basis for establishing a secure global quantum...
Improved ‘Peacock’ Tech Could Lead to Better Hi-Res Displays
ANN ARBOR, Mich., Feb. 6, 2013 — Peacock feathers have a beautiful iridescence — a sheen that shifts color depending on a viewer’s perspective. But, for engineers trying to reproduce the birds’ unique color mechanism to develop high-resolution, reflective color display screens, the...
Plasmonics Promising for Optically Induced Electronics
HOUSTON, Oct. 12, 2012 — Nanoscale plasmonic antennas, or nonamers, attached to graphene could theoretically create on-demand electronic circuits by hitting them with light at particular frequencies.
Photon Triplets Generated
WATERLOO, Ont., Aug. 2, 2010 — An international research team achieved a longstanding milestone in quantum optics research — the direct generation of photon triplets. This result has been sought for years but never achieved until now. An illustration of the triple...
Quantum Signatures of Chaos
TUCSON, Ariz., Oct. 9, 2009 – No one has produced experimental evidence that chaos occurs in the quantum world – the world of photons, atoms, molecules and their building blocks – until now. In a series of experiments, professor Poul Jessen and a group at the University of...
Alice and Bob talk quantum encryptedly across Vienna
VIENNA, Austria – Researchers from all across Europe have set up a quantum key distribution (QKD) system that demonstrates the growing capabilities of this technology at the network level. Forty-one research and industrial organizations from the European Union,...
Triphoton Squeezed to Limit
TORONTO, Jan. 7, 2009 -- A new technique squeezes light to the fundamental quantum limit, a finding that has potential applications for high-precision measurement, next-generation atomic clocks, novel quantum computing and our most fundamental understanding of the universe....
Every Photon Counts, So Count Every Photon
Nov 1, 2008 — Every photon does count, not only in research but also, increasingly, in business. Single-photon detection is at the heart of quantum communications, which offers absolute protection against eavesdropping. The technology is moving out of test beds...
Lasers Tune Quantum Dots
GAITHERSBURG, Md., Aug. 20, 2008 – In what could be a key development in cryptography applications, researchers from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Joint Quantum Institute (JQI), a collaborative center of the University of Maryland and NIST, have...
'Squeezed Light' Record Set
HANOVER, Germany, Jan. 29, 2008 -- An extremely high-quality green laser beam has allowed a record number of photons to be placed in a specific order for use in gravitational wave detectors. Ordering the photons reduced fluctuations in the intensity of the light by 90 percent. This...
