Light-Controlled Enzymes Show Potential in Medicine, Industry
SÃO PAULO, March 19, 2021 — Research conducted at the University of São Paulo’s Chemistry Institute demonstrated the utility of near-infrared and infrared light for use as catalysts in the control of enzymes. The work holds implications for the noninvasive treatment of diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. São Paulo researchers investigated the activity of enzymes immobilized on gold nanoparticles controlled by infrared laser radiation. That process is known as plasmonic
X-ray Laser Helps Fight Sleeping Sickness
MENLO PARK, Calif., Nov. 29, 2012 — A weak spot in the parasite that causes African sleeping sickness, a disease that kills an estimated 30,000 people each year, has been mapped using an x-ray laser, pinpointing a promising new target for treating the fly-borne illness.
Firefly Bioluminescence Could Inform New LEDs
SYRACUSE, N.Y., June 20, 2012 — Syracuse University scientists think that by coating nanorods with firefly enzymes, producing lights that glow without batteries or electricity may be possible.
Frog’s foam fashions fuel
Jun 7, 2010 — With the inevitable decline of fossil fuels, the race is on to discover renewable energy solutions. As an alternative, researchers from the University of Cincinnati have found a way to convert solar energy and carbon dioxide into sugars to create...
Proteins Controlled by Light
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., & DALLAS, Oct. 16, 2008 -- Scientists have discovered a way to use light to control the activity of certain proteins, which they said could one day let them turn off disease-causing aspects of proteins in cells. "This is one of the first examples of someone successfully...
Tiny Biosensor to Detect DNA
TEMPE, Ariz., March 26, 2008 -- A biosensing nanodevice powered by a tiny enzyme motor may one day eliminate long airport security lines and revolutionize health screenings for diseases such as anthrax and cancer and antibiotic-resistant Staph infections. Arizona State...
Film Captures Proteins' Work
GRENOBLE, France, June 20, 2007 -- If a picture is worth a thousand words, than a moving picture should be worth considerably more. While science may play a limited role in most Hollywood films -- except for the mad scientists who nearly destroy the world -- researchers at the...
