Rare-Earth Elements Offer Stable Multiband Microlasing Platform
WUHAN, China, Sept. 9, 2022 — A recent demonstration by a team at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) spotlights the possibility of stable multiband lasing by rare-earth elements. In the work, the research team used polymer-assisted thermal doping to fabricate rare-earth-doped microcavities with ultrahigh intrinsic Q factors exceeding 108. The doping process did not introduce any obvious ion clustering or scattering loss. The ultrahigh intrinsic Q factor makes the process a natural platform for achieving
Researchers Demystify Contradiction of Supermode Microcavity Lasers
BEIJING, June 7, 2021 — Stimulated scattering in supermode microcavities, such as Raman or Brillouin lasers, has proven useful for precision measurements by exploiting the beat note in their lasing spectra. The existence of the beat note (which corresponds to the energy...
Droplet Laser Mechanism May Increase Understanding of Interfacial Forces
SINGAPORE, Feb. 2, 2021 — Researchers from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) found an oscillation mechanism of water droplet resonators, in which the mechanism’s laser resonates along the droplet air interface in the vertical plane. This discovery could lead to a...
Chip-Based Source Creates Entangled Photons 100x More Efficiently
HOBOKEN, N.J., Dec. 21, 2020 — In pursuit of a fast and efficient source of entangled photon pairs necessary for quantum computing and ultrafast communications, researchers from Stevens Institute of Technology have developed a chip-based source capable of producing entangled...
Energy-Efficient Frequency Comb Could Be Used for Quantum Encryption
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 15, 2018 — A new design for a frequency comb that requires 1,000 times less power than traditional combs uses organic molecules to generate combs in ultrahigh-Quality Factor (ultra-high Q) microcavities. A University of Southern California (USC) research team...
Scientists are creating unusual type of laser from a strange material
NICE, France – Just what the heck is a random laser? Because lasers are supposed to produce coherent, linear beams of light, the notion of randomness in a laser beam seems at first to be an oxymoron. As in an ordinary laser, light in a random laser is amplified...
Thin Foil Lamps Outshine Bulbs
CHAMPAIGN, Ill., June 5, 2007 -- Lamps the diameter of a human hair, made with foil and tiny plasma arrays, are being developed for use in residential and commercial lighting and some biomedical applications. “Built of aluminum foil, sapphire and small amounts of gas, the panels...
