Microscopy Method Detects Treatment-Resistant Cancer
BALTIMORE, Oct. 9, 2023 — Therapy-induced senescent (TIS) cells are cancer cells that become resistant to therapies and enter a dormant stage. These cells can emerge from dormancy and induce tumor resistance and relapse. To provide insight into how TIS cells evolve, it is crucial to develop simple, reproducible methods to study the onset and progression of these cells in human cancer cell cultures. An international team from Johns Hopkins University and Italy’s Politecnico di Milano, Fondazione Istituto
Laser-Generated Bubbles Create 3D Liquid Images
UTSUNOMIYA, Japan, Feb. 27, 2017 — A volumetric bubble display using lasers allows viewers to see 3D images without 3D glasses or headsets. Researcher, Kota Kumagai of Utsunomiya University in Japan said the new work is currently a proof of concept, but one day might allow full-color...
For Glass and Silicon Wafer Cutting, Shorter Pulse Widths Yield Superior Results
Dec 8, 2016 — In manufacturing of semiconductor microelectronics, displays, medical devices and many other industries, there is an increasing trend toward higher-precision processing. This means cutting, drilling and marking parts with smaller feature sizes and...
Two-Photon Polymerization: Additive Manufacturing From the Inside Out
Sep 20, 2016 — The 20th century was an era of revolutionary materials science development, as plastics, semiconductors and biomaterials were introduced, and established materials such as metals and ceramics were significantly upgraded. These new and improved...
Can Lasers Cure Alzheimer’s Disease?
GOTHENBURG, Sweden & WROCLAW, Poland, Nov. 4, 2013 — The malfunctioning protein structures that cause diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s can be found using just laser light, a team in Sweden and Poland has discovered. Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden and...
Shorter Pulse Widths Improve Micromachining
Jun 1, 2013 — Many cutting-edge applications are critically enabled by ultrafast lasers, but other demanding applications can now switch to a new type of subnanosecond solid-state laser. In recent years, Q-switched diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers and...
New Materials Enable Dense Data Storage
Jan 1, 2003 — A team at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass., and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge has discovered a class of materials that may offer an efficient and robust method of ultradense data storage based on multiphoton absorption....
