photonic crystal fiber News
Spanish University to Honor Fiber Innovator Philip Russell
SANTANDER, Spain, Oct. 23, 2015 — Philip Russell, the inventor of photonic crystal fiber (PCF), will receive an honorary doctorate from Menéndez Pelayo International University next summer. Originally from Northern Ireland, Russell is director of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Germany and president of The Optical Society (OSA). Philip Russell. Courtesy of Menéndez Pelayo International University. Russell began developing photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) three decades ago.
NKT Photonics Licenses Fiber Laser Technology to Fraunhofer IOF
MUNICH, June 23, 2015 — The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) in Jena has licensed photonic crystal fiber (PCF) technology from NKT Photonics AS of Birkerød, Denmark. The deal cements a research partnership between the longtime...
NKT Photonics Grants PCF Tech License
BIRKERØD, Denmark, Jan. 8, 2014 — NKT Photonics has licensed parts of its photonic crystal fiber (PCF) technology to PicoQuant GmbH for use in PicoQuant’s new Solea supercontinuum lasers. The covered patents include NKT’s fundamental methods for drawing and processing...
Photonic Crystal Fiber Inventor Named OSA VP
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 17, 2012 — Photonic crystal fiber inventor Philip Russell was elected as The Optical Society’s 2013 vice president, the organization announced Tuesday at Frontiers in Optics 2012. Three directors at large were also chosen by OSA members.
NKT Licenses Technology
Mar 1, 2012 — NKT Photonics A/S of Birkerød, Denmark, has licensed parts of its photonic crystal fiber technology to GLOphotonics, originally a spinout from the University of Bath in England and now located in Limoges, France.
Sophisticated fiber optic sensors find niche apps
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Fiber optic sensors are emerging as an alternative to conventional electronic sensors, mostly in applications where highly developed devices are required. Demand for fiber optic sensors is expected to grow within the next five years, largely...
NextGenPCF Project Wraps-Up
MONTPELLIER, France, March 19, 2010 - The European project NextGenPCF for the development of next-generation photonic crystal fibers was officially closed on February 3, 2010. Based at the Horiba Medical site, the ...
Light Manipulation Improved
BATH, England, Nov. 16, 2007 -- A special hollow-core photonic crystal fiber has been used to manipulate light a million times more efficiently than ever before. The research by a team at the University of Bath, England, led by Fetah Benabid said the work has opened the door...
Photonic Crystal Fiber Proposed for Telecom Dispersion Compensation
Dec 1, 2006 — One strength of photonic crystal fiber is its flexibility to be designed with desirable optical characteristics. A photonic crystal fiber’s dispersion, in particular, can be adjusted by modifying its geometrical design; therefore, the fibers seem to...
Short Photonic Crystal Fiber Shows Promise for High-Peak-Power Pulse Generation
Jun 1, 2006 — Photonic crystal fiber enables designers to avoid several of the problems inherent with conventional fiber. In particular, the chief limitation on the power achievable with fiber lasers involves nonlinear effects whose onset scales with the product...
Photonic Bandgap Fiber Makes Unique Gas Sensor
Nov 1, 2004 — Many approaches to making gas sensors from optical fibers have been explored during the past 20 years, and scientists at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg recently developed a novel gas sensor based on a random-hole photonic crystal...
