Laser-irradiated Coating Augments Nonsurgical Treatment of Obesity
WASHINGTON, D.C., April 19, 2022 — A multi-institutional research team in South Korea has enhanced the existing functionality of appetite-suppressing implants in the stomach with photodynamic therapy, coating such an implant with light-activated dye that kills cells that produce ghrelin, known as the “hunger hormone.” The researchers used and coated intragastric satiety-inducing devices, or ISDs in the work. The researchers in the current work designed and introduced these implants in 2019. Appetite-suppressing
A New World of Fiber Sensors
Oct 1, 2009 — Optical fiber is well-known for its ability to carry information at high speeds over long distances. Twenty years after the first transatlantic fiber optic cable was laid, these strands of ultrapure glass continue to offer unrivaled bandwidths. They...
Solar Researchers Win Eni Italgas Science and Environment Prize
Jan 10, 2007 — The scientific commission of the Eni Italgas Prize announced its Science and Environment award has been given to Alan H. Heeger, PhD, co-founder and chief scientist of Konarka Technologies Inc., and to A. Paul Alivisatos, PhD, University of...
Turning Heat into Power, Flexibly
Feb 1, 2005 — Besides making the man, clothing could eventually make the machine -- or, at least, power it. Researchers at the University of Toronto have demonstrated infrared detectors and photovoltaics that have the potential to be woven into cloth. The new...
Gratings and Fresnel Lenses Produced with Sol-Gel Materials
Jan 1, 2005 — Optical communication devices typically need components that are not just physically small, but also economical. Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in Taejon have developed a novel photosensitive sol-gel process...
