COVID-19 Test Detects Viral DNA in Minutes
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., April 16, 2020 — A new study published in ACS Nano shows a proof-of-concept study for a potentially more accurate COVID-19 diagnostic based on plasmonic photothermal sensing. Most COVID-19 testing kits rely on the sensitive method of polymerase chain reaction (PCR). However, this method is beginning to shows signs of strain as the virus continues to spread. Jing Wang and her colleagues at MIT wanted to develop a faster, potentially more accurate COVID-19 test that could be a practical alternative to
THz Sensor to Detect Viruses Before Outbreaks
DAYTON, Ohio, Sept. 26, 2013 — A new project aims to develop a sensor that uses gigahertz-to-terahertz (GHz-to-THz) radiation to detect viruses captured in nanofluidic chips, with the goal of using the system quickly in places where large, highly mobile groups congregate, such as...
Gold Nanoparticles Detect Flu in Minutes
ATHENS, Ga., Aug. 8, 2011 — Physicians and health officials may no longer have to choose between flu tests that are either accurate yet time-consuming or rapid but error-prone, thanks to a new detection method that can identify influenza in minutes at only a fraction of a...
Rationally designing plasmonic devices using imaging and simulation
CÓRDOBA, Argentina, and CAMBRIDGE, UK – Researchers intent on building plasmonic sensors to a set of specifications now have a new tool to help in that quest, according to a group of investigators. The team has demonstrated that electron tomography and electrodynamic simulations can...
What's New with PCR
Sep 1, 2009 — Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), the workhorse of biological analysis, is used in areas ranging from criminal investigations and disease diagnosis to biological research. For example, it is the test that determines whether a strand of hair found at...
