Raytheon Books $106M Laser-Guided Bomb Contract

Raytheon Co. has booked a $106 million contract for its laser-guided Paveway II bombs. The commercial sale is from an international customer, the defense contractor said.

The Paveway line of GPS- and laser-guided bombs has revolutionized tactical air-to-ground warfare by converting “dumb” bombs into precision-guided munitions, said maker Raytheon. Courtesy of Raytheon.

The contract includes kits for both 500-lb and 250-lb guided bombs. The kit transforms “dumb” bombs into precision-guided munitions. Paveway guided bombs comprised more than half the air-to-ground precision-guided weapons used in US military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and in a NATO mission in Libya, the company said. The order was booked in Raytheon’s second quarter of 2013.

Enhanced versions of Paveway add GPS/inertial navigation system guidance capabilities to the laser-guided weapons to increase mission success rates, Raytheon said.
