PowerPhotonic has signed a deal with Lahat Technologies Ltd. to distribute its products in Israel, the precision laser micro-optics maker announced Friday.

Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Scotland, PowerPhotonic provides micro-optics for diode laser and high-power laser applications, primarily for the materials processing, medical systems, optical communications and defense industries.

Lahat was founded in 1992 and has two offices: its headquarters in Kfar Saba in central Israel and another in Galilee (Teradion Industrial Zone). Lahat is ISO 9000-certified and Israeli Ministry of Defence-approved.

"I believe there is a substantial opportunity in Israel for PowerPhotonic across a wide variety of applications," said Roy McBride, PowerPhotonic managing director and co-founder. "PowerPhotonic's innovative micro-optics products are well suited for the Israeli market due to the ability to create a wide range of different solutions for applications from lasers to telecoms."

Lahat VP David Poleg said PowerPhotonic's products will help Lahat to "stay the leader in optics and electro-optics in Israel."

GLOSSARY
diode
A two-electrode device with an anode and a cathode that passes current in only one direction. It may be designed as an electron tube or as a semiconductor device.
electro-optics
1. The branch of physics that deals with the use of electrical energy to create or manipulate light waves, generally by changing the refractive index of a light-propagating material; 2. Collectively, the devices used to affect the intersection of electrical energy and light. Compare with optoelectronics.
micro-optics
Tiny (less than 2 mm in diameter) lenses, beamsplitters and other optical components used, for example, in endoscopes or microscopes or to focus light from semiconductor lasers and optical fibers.
optical communications
The transmission and reception of information by optical devices and sensors.
