CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Sept. 3, 2018 — Aerospace company Boeing has agreed to lease approximately 100,000 sq ft at a new building on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) campus in Kendall Square. The agreement makes Boeing the first major tenant to commit to MIT’s Kendall Square Initiative, which includes six sites slated for housing, retail, R&D, office, academic, and open space uses. Boeing is expected to occupy its new space by the end of 2020. “Our focus on advancing the Kendall Square innovation ecosystem includes a deep and historic understanding of what we call the power of proximity...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESNoncontact Laser Ultrasound Safely Images Human TissueMIT engineers have devised an alternative to conventional ultrasound imaging that doesn’t require contact with the body and can be used on patients who may not tolerate a probe on their body,...BioPhotonics Mar/Apr 2020 IssueHybrid Process Integrates PIC with Artificial Atoms to Scale Up Quantum ChipMIT researchers have developed a way to manufacture and integrate artificial atoms with photonic circuitry to produce a quantum chip that could be used for large-scale quantum systems. These articles will provide the tools optics designers need to tailor their designs to the appropriate manufacturing process and to optimize the cost of component fabrication.Aspheric surfaces are powerful tools that combine the optical corrections of multiple lenses into a single element (Figure 1) and affect performance in ways that spherical optics cannot. For example,...Photonics HandbookIndustrial Lasers: An Introduction to Process Qualification: The step from successfully demonstrating a new laser process on a limited number of samples under laboratory conditions, to scaling that process up for high-volume industrial use is a big one. In particular, it’s necessary to determine how variations in process parameters affect end results, so that acceptable process input and operating ranges can be determined.Materials processing with lasers is actually a broad term for a diverse range of applications. The major categories of these uses, and the lasers that service them, are summarized Table 1.
