General Dynamics C4 Systems and General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems recently announced contract awards from the US Army and Navy for $78 million and $91 million, respectively, one for work to be performed in Pittsfield, Mass. The $78.3 million initial order from the US Army is part of a contract worth up to $1.4 billion for Warfighter Information Network-Tactical (WIN-T) Increment One, which provides Army soldiers deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan with broadband network and satellite communications capabilities. General Dynamics C4 Systems is the lead contractor on WIN-T. Subcontractors for WIN-T Increment One include Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin. Delivery of equipment under this order will begin in May 2008. It will include networking hubs; network nodes serving battalion, brigade and division/corps command posts and expeditionary signal battalions; and network management suites. In June, the Army announced that it would restructure and accelerate the WIN-T program and organized it into four major increments. The former Joint Network Node (JNN) is now WIN-T Increment One. General Dynamics recently received contracts for WIN-T Increment Two and WIN-T Increment Three. WIN-T Increment Four has not been awarded. WIN-T Increment Two will deliver an initial on-the-move broadband networking capability using satellite and radio links, with fielding scheduled to begin in 2009. Increment Three includes development of WIN-T components to meet the full range of network capacity, security and fully on-the-move capabilities for the modular force, with limited user testing scheduled to begin in 2011. Increment Three also addresses the size, weight, power and cooling requirements for systems in Future Combat Systems vehicles. WIN-T Increment Four represents the last of the developmental program elements and will provide technology insertions to enable enhanced satellite communications protection and greater throughput afforded by transformational communications satellites, General Dynamics said. Under the $91,322,561 Navy award, General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems in Pittsfield will provide the Navy with fire control and attack weapon control systems in the US and the UK (US SSGN Attack Weapon Control System [AWCS] and UK Fire Control System). Work began in October and is expected to last through April 2011, and it will be performed in Pittsfield. General Dynamics won a $2.3 billion information technology services contract with the US Air Force in August.
