OXFORD, Mass., Aug. 5, 2020 — IPG Photonics has reported second quarter revenue of $296 million, a year-over-year decrease of 19% and nearly $68 million. Earnings per share dropped to $0.71, representing a 47% decrease year-over-year and down $0.63 from second quarter 2019. In announcing its quarterly results, the company cited foreign exchange loss, change for restructuring, and long-lived asset impairment as contributors to its $0.20 earnings per share quarterly decrease. The company reported a quarterly profit of $38.2 million, down 47% from $72.3 million in the second quarter of 2019. IPG in February reported a...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESNJIT Designers Fabricate Masks and Shields to Combat COVID-19As medical supplies dwindle in the face of increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases, members of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) community are designing and fabricating devices using lasers...BioPhotonics May/Jun 2020 IssueOptical Diagnostic Platform Detects Multiple VirusesUniversity of Rochester researchers are developing an optical chip on a disposable card that is capable of detecting exposure to multiple viruses, within a minute and from a single drop of blood. ...Photonics.com 1/7/2021Optomagnetic Technology Could Reduce Coronavirus Diagnostic TimeA technology developed at Bar-Ilan University, based on a combination of optics and magnetic particles, can rapidly test samples of patients potentially infected with the coronavirus. From that beginning the laser has become an integral part of the conventional technology in many production plants. In the forefront of that revolution has been the CO2 laser, today a varied and sophisticated tool.In the three decades since its introduction, the CO2 laser has become the workhorse of industrial lasers. Today it is available in a range of designs and sizes with output powers of 20 kW and more....Photonics HandbookThe VCSEL Advantage: Increased Power, Efficiency Bring New Applications: Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) differ from edge-emitting lasers in that their output beam is perpendicular to the top surface of the device instead of parallel to it.Unlike an edge emitter, a VCSEL has a maximum operating power that is not limited by catastrophic optical damage of the exit aperture because its aperture is larger and its PN junction does not...Photonics HandbookPowering Lasers: Evaluating Bench Power Supplies: Supplying power to a laser is delicate work because lasers are extremely sensitive and easily damaged. A single pulse of excessive current, lasting only a few microseconds, can overheat and damage the light-emitting facets of a laser diode. While a laser diode driver is the safest and most effective method for powering a laser, in some cases, a bench power supply may be an option. The answer depends on the application and on the performance of the specific bench supply in question.A bench power supply should be thoroughly tested and characterized before it is used to power a laser. The quality of the controls and safety measures incorporated into a bench supply will need to be...Photonics HandbookWHITEPAPERSUnderstanding Virus Mechanisms – One Particle at a TimeSingle-molecule microscopy techniques facilitate direct study of molecular mechanisms, enabling leaps in understanding surrounding how viruses assemble, disassemble, and interact with their hosts.
