Lasers Map Hurricane Isaac Flooding

NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 5, 2012 — US Geological Survey scientists used a lidar technique called terrestrial lidar over the weekend to map urban flooding caused by Hurricane Isaac. “T-lidar” will enable them to collect highly detailed information in select population areas in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, where the hurricane had the greatest impact.     An acronym of light detection and ranging, describing systems that use a light beam in place of conventional microwave beams for atmospheric monitoring, tracking and detection functions. Ladar, an acronym of laser detection and ranging, uses laser light for detection of speed, altitude, direction and range; it is often called laser radar.
