PITTSBURGH, Aug. 29, 2018 — Takashi Kozai, assistant professor of bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) Swanson School of Engineering, has been awarded an R21 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to improve the design of chronic brain implants by investigating the role of oligodendrocytes and oligodendrocyte progenitor cells in the process of host tissue response. Kozai will work with Franca Cambi, professor of neurology at Pitt, to develop in vivo imaging technology that will explore how these cells cause negative tissue response to chronic brain implants. Supported by the...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESVirginia Tech Receives $2.4M to Optically Measure Brain ActivityResearchers at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSM) received a $2.4 million National Institutes of Health grant to use optically pumped...BioPhotonics Jul/Aug 2021 IssueNIH Researchers Speed Image Processing for Fluorescence MicroscopyAdvances in image processing techniques could reduce post-processing time for highly complex microscopic images up to several thousandfold, based on work done by a research team at the National...BioPhotonics Sep/Oct 2020 Issueams OSRAM Sells Traxon Technologies: Week in Brief: 05/20/22Optical technology company ams OSRAM reached an agreement to sell its Traxon Technologies business to Prosperity Group, a privately owned lighting company based in Hong Kong. These articles will provide the tools optics designers need to tailor their designs to the appropriate manufacturing process and to optimize the cost of component fabrication.Aspheric surfaces are powerful tools that combine the optical corrections of multiple lenses into a single element (Figure 1) and affect performance in ways that spherical optics cannot. For example,...Photonics HandbookMachine Vision Cameras: Making the Right Selection: Improvements and affordability have broadened the use of vision systems for inspection, but several factors should be considered before making a purchase.Technological advances have resulted in new, higher-quality sensors that enable machine vision cameras to deliver greater features and functionality at a lower cost than ever before. These factors...Photonics HandbookFluorescence Lifetime Imaging: Choosing the Best Approach: Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM), which measures the spatial distribution of the fluorescence decay, can be achieved either in the time or in the frequency domain. Each approach exhibits advantages and disadvantages, depending on the type of light detector and acquisition method employed. The term fluorescence is often applied as a synonym for photoluminescence, although luminescence actually covers fluorescence and phosphorescence. Both of these terms describe the process of...Photonics HandbookLasers for Microscopy: Major Trends: In order for biologists, drug developers, clinical lab professionals and other scientists to fully exploit new microscopy techniques and applications, parallel developments in laser technology are often required. Laser manufacturers are responding with products optimized to match the needs of these applications.Laser development for the microscopy market continues to be driven by key trends in applications, which currently include superresolution techniques, multiphoton applications in optogenetics and...Photonics HandbookWHITEPAPERSHigh-Speed Imaging in Biomedical Microfluidic ResearchThis whitepaper discusses multiple case studies when Phantom cameras have assisted in the advancement of microfluidic and cellular research.Photonics.com 11/17/2020A 0.19 e- rms Read Noise 16.7 Mpixel Stacked Quanta Image Sensor with 1.1 µm-Pitch Backside Illuminated PixelsThis paper reports a 16.7 Mpixel, 3D-stacked backside illuminated Quanta Image Sensor (QIS) with 1.1 µm-pitch pixels which achieves 0.19 e- rms array read noise and 0.12 e- rms best single-pixel read...Photonics.com 2/11/2022Cutting Edge Measurement of an InsertThe 3D optical profilometer S neox Five Axis makes it possible to quickly and flexibly obtain the key parameters necessary for the continuous improvement of our tools, such as the cutting edge...Photonics.com 12/10/2021Diamonds are Forever: Using NIR to Find the FakesCubic zirconia is easy and inexpensive to make and the diamond industry has long considered it an existential threat.
