Quantum Communication Network Bridges Rochester Universities

ROCHESTER, N.Y., May 6, 2025 — Researchers at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and University of Rochester recently connected their campuses with an experimental quantum communications network using two optical fibers. The Rochester Quantum Network (RoQNET) uses single photons to transmit information about 11 mi along fiber-optic lines at room temperature using optical wavelengths. “Our focus is on distributed quantum entanglement, and RoQNET is a test bed for doing that,” said Stefan Preble, a professor in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering at RIT. RIT and University of Rochester have...Read full article

    quantum
The term quantum refers to the fundamental unit or discrete amount of a physical quantity involved in interactions at the atomic and subatomic scales. It originates from quantum theory, a branch of physics that emerged in the early 20th century to explain phenomena observed on very small scales, where classical physics fails to provide accurate explanations. In the context of quantum theory, several key concepts are associated with the term quantum: Quantum mechanics: This is the branch of...
