Terahertz Analysis Helps Target Measures for Controlling Pollution
BEIJING, March 24, 2017 — A combination of terahertz (THz) absorption and 2D correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) has been used to identify the concentration and pollution sources of PM2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5 µ in diameter) in the Beijing-Tianjing-Hebei region of China. The THz-2DCOS analysis revealed that samples with high PM2.5 were related to higher THz absorption at selected frequencies. This information was used to determine appropriate emergency measures needed to relieve haze
Scott Awarded Physics Teaching Award
ROCHESTER, N.Y., March 21, 2017 — Ryan Scott, a 2016 alumnus of Rochester Institute of Technology’s (RIT) College of Science, has been recognized by the American Association of Physics Teachers and the Advanced Laboratory Physics Association for his work in RIT's School of...
Using Mathematics to Improve Effectiveness of Tomography
ARLINGTON, Texas, March 15, 2017 — Novel mathematical theories could advance imaging techniques in optical tomography — a technique for creating three-dimensional images of the internal structures of a solid object by analyzing the travel of waves of energy, such as X-rays,...
New Bilayer Material Could Improve LED Technology
LAWRENCE, Kansas, Feb. 17, 2017 — A new bilayer material measuring less than one nanometer in thickness per layer could lead to more efficient and versatile light emission. Researchers working at the Ultrafast Laser Lab at the University of Kansas (KU) successfully created the...
Three Awarded NAS Scientific Discovery Award
WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 7, 2017 — The National Academy of Sciences has awarded Professor Gabriela González, a professor of physics and astronomy at Louisiana State University (LSU), with its 2017 Award for Scientific Discovery. González was born and raised in...
Moth’s Eye Inspires Design and Applications of NASA Camera
GREENBELT, Md., Feb. 2, 2017 — A moth's eye is the inspiration behind the technology that allows a new NASA-developed camera to create images of astronomical objects with far greater sensitivity than was previously possible. When magnified, a moth's eye contains a very fine array...
Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics Device Offers Widest Real-Time Views of the Sun
BIG BEAR, Calif., Jan. 11, 2017 — A groundbreaking new optical device has been developed to correct images of the Sun previously distorted by multiple layers of atmospheric turbulence. The device developed at the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s (NJIT) Big Bear Solar...

Nov 9, 2016 — SPIE Photonics West 2017 (Jan. 28 to Feb. 2, San Francisco), the largest exhibition and conference in the photonics industry, showcases the most innovative research, products and ideas in the field. For many in the industry, the year truly begins...
Technicolor Galaxies
CRAWLEY, Australia, Nov. 4, 2016— Imagine being able to “see” radio waves. The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) telescope can do just that by showing the viewer what the Universe would look like if human eyes could in fact see radio waves. The GaLactic and Extragalactic...
No One-Size-Fits-All Approach to Selecting Optical Coatings
Nov 2, 2016 — Optical coating design and performance are critical for a growing number of applications in fields as diverse as biomedicine and astronomy. Coatings can perform a variety of functions, from imparting high reflectivity on telescope mirrors, to...
Wavefront Sensing Under Unique Lighting Conditions
Nov 1, 2016 — While the invention of the general principle of Hartmann wavefront sensing goes back to the beginning of the 20th century1, the advent of industrial cameras and micro lenses in the 1970s facilitated broader applications2. Nowadays, Shack-Hartmann...
GSU, Alpao to Upgrade CHARA Array
MOUNT WILSON, Calif., Oct. 27, 2016 — Georgia State University's Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA) and optics developer Alpao SAS have signed a contract for the development of an adaptive optics upgrade for the CHARA array, the largest optical interferometer array in...
Optimal Conditions, Great Viewing
Oct 21, 2016 — Nestled in the Andes mountain range in the Atacama Desert in Chile sits the Las Campanas Observatory. At an elevation of almost 8,000 feet, the remote location is prized for its dark skies, excellent weather and superior visibility. Soon it will be...
From Masers to Lasers in Space — and at the Cinema!
Oct 7, 2016 — Sixty years ago, physicists Charles Hard Townes, James P. Gordon and H.J. Zeiger demonstrated the maser (microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation). It wasn’t long before Townes and fellow physicist Arthur Schawlow proved...
A High-Resolution View of the Universe
Oct 3, 2016 — Under ideal circumstances, the resolution of an optical system is limited by the diffraction of light waves. This diffraction limit, the maximum resolution a telescope can achieve, improves linearly with the telescope’s aperture. However, the...
Hyperspectral Imaging Poised for Growth
HYDERABAD, India, Sept. 20, 2016 — The global hyperspectral imaging market is projected to reach $90 million by 2021 with a compound annual growth rate of 9.8 percent, according to a report by Mordor Intelligence.
