Chip-Based Source Creates Entangled Photons 100x More Efficiently
HOBOKEN, N.J., Dec. 21, 2020 — In pursuit of a fast and efficient source of entangled photon pairs necessary for quantum computing and ultrafast communications, researchers from Stevens Institute of Technology have developed a chip-based source capable of producing entangled photon pairs 100× more efficiently than previously possible. Traditional methods trap light in meticulously crafted nanoscale microcavities; light moving through the cavity causes individual photons to resonate and split into entangled pairs.
4D OCT Helps to Solve Mystery of Early Embryonic Heartbeat
HOBOKEN, N.J., Aug. 12, 2020 — Scientists from Stevens Institute of Technology and Baylor College of Medicine used 4D optical coherence tomography (OCT) to study the pumping mechanism underlying the developing mammalian heart. 4D OCT allowed them to investigate the functional...
Stevens Researcher Receives NSF CAREER Award to Develop Portable Solar Panels
HOBOKEN, N.J., Jan. 8, 2019 — Stephanie Lee, an assistant professor at Stevens Institute of Technology, was awarded a 2019 CAREER Award by the National Science Foundation to fund her research in engineering green, portable, cost-efficient solar panels and other power sources....
Stevens Institute of Technology Researchers Awarded NSF Quantum Grant
HOBOKEN, N.J., Nov. 8, 2018 — In a coordinated national strategy to fund quantum-related research and education, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded two of its eight nationwide RAISE-EQuIP grants to physicists Yuping Huang and Stefan Strauf at Stevens Institute of...
Scalable Quantum Light Source Enables Quantum Cryptography, Computing
HOBOKEN, N.J., Oct. 31, 2018 — Researchers at Stevens Institute of Technology and Columbia University have developed a scalable, precise method for creating large numbers of quantum light sources on a chip. These light sources could be used for quantum computers and cryptographic...
DCS 2017 Brings Defense, Environment Into Focus
Feb 27, 2017 — Changes in the nature of warfare in today’s high-tech world demand the most advanced tools for soldiers and others in the defense and security sectors. Environmental and health care segments are evolving, too, as an onset of innovative...
Holographic lithography boosts plasmonic nanogap array production
HOBOKEN, N.J. – A technique based on methods from holographic lithography has been developed to demonstrate a new approach for scaling up the fabrication of plasmonic nanogap arrays while simultaneously reducing costs and infrastructure. A team led by Dr. Stefan...
Ultrafast free-space communications achieved with lasers
HOBOKEN, N.J. – A new high-speed communications technology that is not limited by a physical conductor, such as fiber optics, uses laser light to transmit data through readily available open space. This optical free-space technology could revolutionize...
Military Money in Optics Research
May 19, 2011 — As federal funding for research has generally stagnated over the past decade or so, investigators have sought other sources of support, including grants from the military and assorted security agencies. To be sure, optics technologies have been...
Laser Tech to Improve Free Space Communications
HOBOKEN, N.J., April 13, 2011 — A high-speed communications technology not limited by a physical conductor such as fiber optics has been developed using laser light to transmit data through readily available open space. This optical free space communication could lead to faster...
Guo Gains Grant for Semiconductor Laser Arrays
HOBOKEN, N.J., Oct. 15, 2010 — The National Science Foundation has announced funding for Dr. Yi Guo's research at Stevens Institute of Technology into a rigorous mathematical approach to the analysis and control of coupled semiconductor laser systems. Guo, from the Department of...
Stevens Awarded NSF Grants for Nano/Micro Devices
Sep 16, 2008 — Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., has received two grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for nano/micro device fabrication and nanosensor development. Researchers working on the project include principal investigator and...
Nanoelectronics Researcher Receives AFOSR Grant
Apr 2, 2008 — Eui-Hyeok Yang, PhD, has received a three-year grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) under the Physics and Electronics Directorate for nanoelectronics research based on carbon nanotube (CNT) quantum dots. The specific amount...
