Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology News
Low-cost SWIR Imager Shows Promise for Machine Vision
ST. GALLEN, Switzerland, Nov. 4, 2021 — A European research group has created a device for upconverting shortwave infrared (SWIR) to visible light. The team’s all-organic SWIR upconversion device consists of a SWIR-sensitive photodetector integrated with a visible light-emitting unit in the form of an OLED display. The organic upconversion device (OUC) directly converts SWIR to visible photons. It could become a low-cost alternative to the inorganic, compound-based SWIR-imaging technologies that are currently
Fluorometer Measures Glucose Levels Noninvasively
DUBENDORF, Switzerland, Jan. 23, 2015 — A new light-based diagnostic tool allows physicians to monitor blood sugar levels in patients who can’t give blood samples. The Glucolight system is intended to help prevent hypoglycemia in babies born prematurely. It was developed by...
Thin-Film Solar Cell Efficiency Exceeds 20 Percent
DÜBENDORF, Switzerland, Jan. 24, 2013 — Thin-film solar cells on flexible polymer foils, based on copper indium gallium (di)selenide (CIGS), have set an efficiency record of 20.4 percent for converting sunlight into electricity.
Project to boost photovoltaics in the EU
Sep 1, 2012 — The Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) has launched a €10 million (about $12.2 million) European Union-funded project to develop affordable, more efficient solar cells. Thin-film solar cell technologies have...
