Nonlinear Beam Cleaning Developed for Mode-Locked Lasers
LAUSANNE, Switzerland, Dec. 22, 2020 — Researchers from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) have developed a method of nonlinear beam cleaning in a multimode laser cavity. The technique establishes a new approach for the generation of high-energy ultrashort pulses with single-mode beam quality. As a result, the work enables fiber lasers to offer the same power levels as solid-state lasers without requiring cascaded amplifiers, Ugur Tegin told Photonics Media. Tegin is lead author of the
Coherently Combined, 10.4-kW Laser Delivers Record Power
WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 19, 2020 — Coherent beam combining, paired with direct water cooling in the testing stage of development, has helped produce the new ultrafast fiber laser technology introduced by the Institute of Applied Physics (IAP) at Friedrich Schiller University Jena...
For Lasers, No Vibrations Allowed
Dec 1, 2013 — Efficient use of a laser beam is dependent not only on the power of the laser source and beam quality, but also on its precise guidance. Short- and ultrashort-pulse lasers are used to remove materials on an atomic level for high-precision...
Northrop Grumman Fires Up Laser
Aug 1, 2012 — Northrop Grumman Corp. of Falls Church, Va., test-fired the first product in its next-generation Firestrike family of high-energy solid-state lasers. Conducted at the company’s Redondo Beach, Calif., laboratory, the tests demonstrated that the...
Northrop Grumman Fires Up Firestrike Laser
REDONDO BEACH, Calif., May 10, 2012 — The global security company test-fired the first product in its next-generation Firestrike family of high-energy solid-state lasers, which meet size, weight reduction and ruggedization goals for operational applications, it said.
Green FS Laser Achieves Record Power
AACHEN, Germany, May 20, 2011 — The first-ever laser to generate an average power of 280 W at a 515-nm wavelength with perfect beam quality now is ready to operate at the touch of a button. The turnkey laser is based on a Yb:Innoslab amplifier with frequency doubling. Fraunhofer...
Diode-Pumped Solid-State UV Lasers Improve LED Sapphire Wafer Scribing
Oct 14, 2010 — The green movement, energy conservation efforts and global warming headlines have made the world aware of the need for more energy-efficient lighting alternatives. The range of applications for high-brightness LEDs continues to expand. Laser...
Lockheed Fiber Laser Nabs $14M Contract
BOTHELL, Wash., Sept. 20, 2010 — The US Army awarded Bethesda, Md.-based Lockheed Martin a $14 million contract to design, develop, build and test a high-power fiber laser-based system suitable for military applications. The Army Space and Missile Defense Command contract...
Northrop Grumman Exceeds Fiber Laser Goals
REDONDO BEACH, Calif., June 24, 2010 — Northrop Grumman Corp., a defense and technology company, has surpassed Phase I goals for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (Darpa) Revolution in Fiber Lasers (RIFL) program that seeks to mature fiber laser technology. As a...
Lasers reinforce lightweight structures
PARIS and AACHEN, Germany – At the JEC Composites Show in Paris, researchers from Germany’s Fraunhofer institutes showed how lasers can make the manufacturing of fiber-reinforced thermoplastic structures more efficient, reliable and automated. Fiber-reinforced plastics...
Fiber, Disk can Coexist in Industrial Market
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 21, 2010 — The industrial laser market has room for both disk and fiber lasers, and in the future hybrid systems may appear. Those were some of the conclusions of a Market Focus panel discussion on industrial lasers held during the CLEO/QELS 2010 exhibition....
QCL peak power record smashed
EVANSTON, Ill. – Only a year ago, the peak output power of a quantum cascade laser (QCL) was 34 W. Today, thanks to researchers at the Center for Quantum Devices at Northwestern University, peak power of 120 W from a single device at room temperature has been...
Adding Laser Beams: The Best of Both Worlds
Jun 1, 2008 — The combined illumination provided by two automobile headlights is twice that provided by a single headlight. However, it doesn’t work that way with lasers. Even if the lasers are aligned with closely spaced parallel beams — so that the beams...
Focusing High-Power, Single-Mode Laser Beams
May 1, 2008 — New generations of thin-disk and fiber lasers are combining excellent beam quality — M2 typically between 1.2 and ∼8 — with kilowatts output power. This combination brings the performance of beam-forming optics into question.1, 2 In...
Optically In-Well-Pumped VECSELs: An Attractive New Source in the Near-IR
Nov 1, 2004 — Think fast: If you needed a wavelength-tunable laser with good beam quality in the near-infrared, what would you choose? A Ti:sapphire or a dye laser probably immediately springs to mind, but each has its drawbacks. For example, Ti:sapphire...
Disk Lasers Facilitate Cutting and Remote Welding
Oct 1, 2003 — One of the newest laser technologies of note is the Yb:YAG disk laser, with commercial systems that can deliver 1 kW of power through a 150-µm-diameter fiber. End users can expect to see 4-kW systems, such as the one demonstrated by Trumpf Laser...
Fiber Lasers Find Their Footing
Oct 1, 2003 — The competition between fiber and disk lasers seems to be heating up with the fibers’ quest for a share of the industrial welding and cutting market. A group of researchers from Southampton Photonics Inc. and the University of...
