Optical Element Could Enable Pocket Telescope
OTTAWA, Ontario, June 10, 2021 — A novel optical element will one day enable composite lenses and telescopes in a form factor small enough to fit in a pocket. The device, developed by Orad Reshef and Jeff Lundeen of the University of Ottawa, is called a spaceplate. Its function, say its developers, is to mimic the empty space needed to focus an image — meaning one day photographers will be able to take pictures of faraway subjects without lugging around a long-barrel telephoto lens. “A spaceplate is an
3D Visualization Method Reveals Molecular Position, Orientation, Oscillations
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 26, 2020 — Researchers at the University of Rochester and the Fresnel Institute in France developed a method for visualizing molecules’ position and orientation in 3D, as well as their oscillations. The technique could allow for greater insights into the...
Optical Approach to Fracture Testing Measures Concrete Strength
LEEDS, England, July 20, 2017 — A light-based approach to measuring the strength of opaque heterogeneous concrete mixes applies a light-refracting coating, designed to display stress positions, to the surface of the concrete; then takes a photograph of the concrete surface and...
HD Tech Could Get Big Boost from Little Shrimp
PHILADELPHIA, June 28, 2011 — A two-part man-made waveplate inspired by the eye of the peacock mantis shrimp could improve CD, DVD, Blu-ray and holographic technology, creating even higher definition and larger storage density.
Each Photon Sends 1.63 Bits
CHAMPAIGN, Ill., March 25, 2008 -- The record for the most amount of information sent by a single photon has been broken in new research that reports an average transmission of 1.63 bits of information per photon, allowing "superdense" coding for quantum communication to become even...
