Novel Hybrid Material Facilitates Photon Upconversion
RIVERSIDE, Calif., June 26, 2023 — University of California, Riverside (UCR) researchers have designed a composite material that offers powerful photon upconversion capabilities and that could support a range of light-driven applications as a result. The composite is made from silicon quantum dots and the organic molecule anthracene, which is used in OLED emissions. Anthracene’s unusual properties enable it to convert lower-energy light into higher-energy light. Applications for the composite span the treatment of
Single-Crystal Perovskites Made with Standard Practices Are Stable, Flexible
LA JOLLA, Calif., Aug. 6, 2020 — Engineers at the University of California, San Diego have developed a way to fabricate perovskites as single-crystal thin films. The method, which uses standard semiconductor fabrication processes including lithography, produces flexible,...
Optical Sensor Based on Plasmonics Quickly Detects Hydrogen Gas
GÖTEBORG, Sweden, April 15, 2019 — An optical nanosensor that changes color when the amount of hydrogen in the environment changes could be used to quickly detect leaks when hydrogen mixes with air. Hydrogen, a clean and renewable energy carrier, could power vehicles in the future;...
Next-Gen Semi Materials Could Be a Boost for Photovoltaics, Lighting
ATLANTA, Jan. 17, 2019 — Next-generation semiconducting materials have the potential to transform lighting technology and photovoltaics, suggest researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), in a study of the unusual physics behind hybrid...
Researchers Devise Exciton Scaling Rule for Optoelectronics Design
HOUSTON and LOS ALAMOS, N.M., June 15, 2018 — Scientists have created a scale by which labs can determine the binding energy of excitons, and thus their bandgap structures, in perovskite quantum wells of any thickness. The findings were based on a study of excitons trapped in quantum wells made...
Hybrid Materials Could Have Range of Optical Applications
LEIOA, Spain, Aug. 7, 2017 — Hybrid photoactive materials, created by incorporating fluorescent dyes that are used in solution into channeled inorganic structures, could be used for a range of applications including biomedicine. The materials were found to give the dye...
Nano 'Sandwich' Could Enhance Optical Properties, Tunability of Graphene
HOUSTON, March 7, 2017 — Use of a “nanoscale sandwich,” made from two atom-thick slices of graphene around nanoclusters of magnesium oxide (MgO), could expand the optoelectronic properties for graphene. Researchers at Rice University, using previous experiments...
