Synapse-Like Phototransistor Enables Persistent, Low-Energy Optical Switching
GOLDEN, Colo., May 11, 2021 — Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) created a phototransistor that allows long-lived persistent photoconductivity (PPC), which is a form of optical memory. The new structure is a heterojunction between perovskite semiconductors and carbon nanotubes. The device could enable optical switching with low energy consumption for potential use in sensors and artificial neural networks and in applications such as self-driving
Persistent Photoconductivity Used to Control Semiconductor Cells
RALEIGH, N.C., May 23, 2017 — Use of light to alter the conductivity of semiconductor material could provide a new way to control cell behavior on semiconductors used for bioelectronics. The approach draws on persistent photoconductivity, a phenomenon that causes some materials...
Light Damps 2-D Semiconductor Conductivity
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 7, 2014 — While light enhances the conductivity of most semiconductors, it has the opposite effect on 2-D molybdenum disulfide. A team from MIT and Harvard University discovered the phenomenon, in which intense laser pulses reduced by about two-thirds the...
Laser Nanolithography Could Improve Nanomaterials
SINGAPORE, July 23, 2014 — Lasers can “draw” patterns on nanomaterials, a technique that shows potential for improving the functionality of electronic and optoelectronic components. Research teams at the National University of Singapore, led by professor Dr. Sow...
Solar Cells, Array Films Constructed from Nanotubes
Sep 1, 2007 — Thin-film solar cells have been fabricated from double-walled carbon nanotubes, a material that is relatively untapped in photovoltaic designs but that offers high photoconductivity, mobility and stability. Researchers from Tsinghua University in...
