AI-Aided Spectroscopy Assesses Burn Severity to Improve Recoveries
WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 17, 2023 — Researchers at Stony Brook University developed a neural network model that uses terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) to evaluate burns and predict healing outcomes. The latest work builds on a previous advancement in which the researchers developed a portable, hand-held imaging device for fast THz-TDS imaging of burn injuries, which aims to make the method practical for clinical use. Physical changes caused by a burn will produce alterations in the THz reflectivity. For this
Terahertz Quantum Cascade Laser Light Propogates Beyond Laboratory Walls
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 4, 2020 — Researchers at MIT and the University of Waterloo (Canada) created a high-power quantum cascade laser (QCL) capable of generating terahertz radiation outside of a laboratory environment. The laser has applications for skin cancer diagnostics and...

Terahertz Spectroscopy on the Cutting Edge of Material Testing
Jun 27, 2018 — Just a few years ago, the application of terahertz radiation seemed obscure at best. If experts were asked for killer applications, few could be named. In 2018, however, terahertz measuring instruments are showing significant market potential....
Light Damps 2-D Semiconductor Conductivity
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 7, 2014 — While light enhances the conductivity of most semiconductors, it has the opposite effect on 2-D molybdenum disulfide. A team from MIT and Harvard University discovered the phenomenon, in which intense laser pulses reduced by about two-thirds the...
Conscripting Terahertz Sensors
Apr 1, 2012 — Imaging and spectroscopy in the terahertz frequency range eventually will give troops a welcome advantage in the field. Terahertz waves are short enough to provide resolution of less than 1 mm, yet long enough to penetrate most nonmetallic...
Rare Earths Trade Issues Move to WTO
Apr 1, 2012 — What’s a manufacturer to do? The pricing and availability of rare earths such as cerium oxide, used in optical production, have been a concern for many companies in our industry for years now, and the underlying issues remain unresolved....
Student Innovators Improve Imaging
TROY, N.Y., and PASADENA, Calif., March 15, 2011 — The latest winners of the Lemelson-MIT Rensselaer Student Prize have been named, with prizes going to students using terahertz technology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Benjamin...
THz Waves Measure Nanofilms
GAITHERSBURG, Md., May 13, 2009 – A technique that could be an important quality-control tool to help monitor semiconductor manufacturing processes and evaluate new insulating materials has been discovered by researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Techology (NIST)....
THz SPECTROSCOPY
Apr 1, 2008 — An addition to the “Optical Science and Engineering” series, the book Terahertz Spectroscopy: Principles and Applications describes methods used for time-domain terahertz spectroscopic measurements, such as the generation and detection of terahertz...
Laser Produces T-Ray Diffractive Elements
Apr 1, 2003 — To ease the integration of components for terahertz spectroscopy and signal processing, a team at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge has fabricated integrated diffractive elements in LiNbO3 using femtosecond pulses from an amplified...
