After Fusion Failure, NIF Shifts Priorities
LIVERMORE, Calif., May 6, 2013 — Having failed to achieve fusion by its target date, the National Ignition Facility (NIF) is shifting its priorities and has replaced longtime director Dr. Edward Moses, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Director Parney Albright announced last week. L. Jeffrey Atherton is now NIF director. Moses will remain in his position as principal associate director for the NIF & Photon Science Directorate. Atherton received his PhD in chemical engineering from MIT in 1985 and began his ca...
Simulations Uncover Obstacle to Harnessing Laser-driven Fusion
COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 27, 2013 — A once-promising approach for using next-generation, ultra-intense lasers to help deliver commercially viable fusion energy has been brought into serious question by new experimental results and first-of-a-kind simulations of laser-plasma...
Avalanche of emissions creates first atomic x-ray laser
LIVERMORE, Calif. – The shortest, purest x-ray laser pulses ever achieved fulfill a 45-year-old prediction and could open the door to new materials, medicines and devices. Physicists from Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) created the pulses, which were...
NIF Fires Record-Setting Laser Shot
LIVERMORE, Calif., March 22, 2012 — The 192 lasers fired in unison at the National Ignition Facility this week delivered a record 1.875 million joules of ultraviolet laser light to its target chamber, exceeding NIF’s original design specification and setting the stage for...
New Atomic X-ray Laser Created
LIVERMORE, Calif., Feb. 3, 2012 — The shortest, purest x-ray laser pulses ever achieved were created by aiming the Linac Coherent Light Source at a capsule of neon gas, setting off an avalanche of x-ray emissions.
Laser-Produced Proton Beams Open New Research Areas
LIVERMORE, Calif., Dec. 8, 2011 — Recent proton beam experiments using high-intensity lasers have unveiled a new way to heat material and create novel states of matter in the laboratory. This advance could lead to medical applications and even offer insight into planetary science....
LaserFest Seminar Held in San Diego
SAN DIEGO, Calif., March 17, 2010 – As part of LaserFest, the year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first working laser, the Optical Society (OSA) and the American Physical Society (APS) sponsored a special day-long seminar on past, present and future developments in...
LLNL Mirrors Used for Solar Mission
LIVERMORE, Calif., March 15, 2010 — A technology originally developed to make computer chips smaller, faster and more powerful is now being used in space to take images of the sun every 10 seconds with 10 times better resolution that high-definition television.
NIF Foes Fear Finished Laser
WASHINGTON, DC, April 2, 2009 – The Department of Energy (DoE) announced the completion of what they are calling the world’s largest laser and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has certified its completion, but that doesn't mean everyone is happy about it....
Sound Waves Generate Light
LIVERMORE, Calif., March 18, 2009 – High frequency sounds have been converted into light for the first time by reversing a process that changes electrical signals into sounds. The new tool might be used to enhance the way computer chips, LEDs and transistors are built. Researchers at...
Schwarzenegger Touts Energy Innovations During Superlaser Tour
Nov 12, 2008 — California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said Monday advanced laser technology "has the potential to revolutionize our energy future." His remarks were made as he toured the stadium-sized National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore...
Petawatt Power Peak Reached
AUSTIN, Texas, April 9, 2008 -- The Texas Petawatt laser produced a petawatt of peak power on March 31, making it the highest powered laser in the world, said Todd Ditmire, a physicist at the University of Texas at Austin. The laser is brighter than sunlight on the surface of the...
