Conventional controllers for laser scan systems do not allow to predict the actual path of the laser beam on the work piece. A tedious process of testing different parameters and delay settings during actual laser processing is necessary to get a good result. The result varies from user to user. The optimum throughput is a compromise with the achieved accuracy and depends on the tuning of the laser scan system.

Schlüter details a pipeline-based trajectory planning software for laser processing, capable of revolutionizing the way users program laser processes. The software enables trajectory planning of the laser beam ahead of time by providing a graph of the actual path before the laser is even turned on. The program automatically optimizes accuracy and throughput based on only two main input parameters set by the user — making delay adjustments and manual skywriting insertion things of the past.

Currently, application engineers in laser processing labs cannot predict what the outcome of a certain laser process will be before actually testing and tweaking the parameters of the laser scan system in the laboratory in several cumbersome optimization iterations.

This task takes time, occupies lab capacity, waste marking substrates, and leads to long development times and therefore immediately impacts time-to-market for new products and consequently the bottom line of the company.

Holger SchlüterHolger Schlüter, Ph.D., received a doctorate from Fraunhofer ILT. He worked from 1996 until 2008 at TRUMPF in Germany, and later in the U.S. in various leading positions. He joined SCANLAB in 2015 as head of business development.
