Fiber-optic sensors (FOS) have made a complete transition from basic lab prototypes to successful commercial products. Their commercialization has been slow-moving at times but consistently progressive, innovative, and charted along a course dotted with many successful companies, products, and solutions. Although the COVID-19 crisis presents challenges in the short term, the outlook for fiber-optic sensing remains bright. Steady growth and new and expanding opportunities lie ahead in biomedical, industrial, aerospace, and environmental monitoring applications. This keynote presentation with Alexis Mendez provides a brief overview on the historical evolution of FOS, their present market and trends, and their expected future.

About the presenter:
Alexis MéndezAlexis Méndez, Ph.D., is President of MCH Engineering LLC, a consulting firm specializing in optical fiber sensing technology. He has over 20 years of experience in optical fiber technology, sensors and instrumentation. He was the former Group Leader of the Fiber Optic Sensors Lab within ABB Corporate Research (USA). During this time, he led R&D activities for the development of fiber sensors for use in industrial plant, oil & gas, and high voltage electric power applications. He has written 50 technical publications, taught several short courses on fiber sensors, holds 5 US patents, and is recipient of an R&D 100 award. He is also a past chairman of the International Optical Fiber Sensors Conference (OFS-18); is editor of the Specialty Optical Fibers Handbook; and is a fellow of SPIE. He holds a doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering from Brown University.
