Freeform optics are a great choice when designing off-axis optical systems. Understanding and specifying total error for freeform optical components can help with integrating the components during system alignment and performance testing. Total error includes specifying form (irregularity), surface texture, and position errors. This talk provides an overview of freeform total error and advances in optical manufacturing and testing to achieve low total error freeform optics.

About the presenter:
Jessica DeGroote NelsonJessica DeGroote Nelson, Ph.D., is Director of Technology and Strategy at Optimax Systems. She is also an adjunct professor at the University of Rochester's Institute of Optics. She started her career at Optimax after graduating from the University of Rochester. In nearly fifteen years at Optimax, she has won several Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) awards, funded by NASA and the Department of Defense (DoD), leading a team of researchers on these initiatives.

She is a fellow member of SPIE and senior member of Optica (formally OSA). She is active in the Optics and Electro Optics Standard Council (OEOSC) and the local section of the Optica-Rochester Section where she served as president and currently leads outreach activities.
