As the number of applications requiring mechanical alignment increases, the demand for new types of position-sensing detectors, specifically Lateral-effect PSDs is on the rise. These position sensors feature state of the art lateral technology to provide a continuous analog output proportional to the displacement of the centroid of a light spot from the center, on the active area. With added optics and electronics, lateral-effect detectors are able to efficiently measure angle and distance.
