Scientists Analyze Final Images from Cassini
LANCASTER, England, Jan. 15, 2020 — Toward the completion of its 13-year mission, which ended in September 2017, the Cassini spacecraft performed a set of orbits that brought it closer to Saturn than ever before. By passing over the planet’s polar regions at a low altitude, Cassini’s ultraviolet camera could observe Saturn’s auroras at an unprecedented resolution. Scientists at Lancaster University have analyzed the high-resolution imagery showing the auroras’ small-scale structure. The images from
Hubble Spots Vapor Venting Off Europa
GREENBELT, Md., Dec. 18, 2013 — NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope spectroscopically detected water vapor over the frigid south pole of Jupiter’s satellite Europa, providing the first strong evidence of water plumes erupting off the moon’s surface. This is an...
Marking 10 Years of Adaptive Optics at the VLT
HEIDELBERG, Germany, Nov. 30, 2011 — In November 2001, the NACO instrument — recently added to the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) in northern Chile — captured its first light. Since then, its ability to bring stellar objects into sharp...
Plasma Propels 'Flying Saucer'
GAINESVILLE, Fla., June 12, 2008 -- A patent application submitted for a wingless, circular, spinning aircraft design could make science fiction's "flying saucers" a reality, but its creator cautions that significant obstacles need to be overcome in the move from paper to prototype,...
