Diamond Defects Boost Magnetic Field Sensing for Brain Activity Mapping
MELBOURNE, Australia, July 12, 2022 — A team from Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (Fraunhofer IAF), with diamond sensing technology experts from RMIT University, demonstrated that magnetic-field-dependent emission from nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond deliver a measurement of magnetic fields with 10× more precision than current state-of-the-art techniques. This boost in sensitivity could improve existing techniques for magnetically sensing and mapping brain activity in disorders such as
Portable Concussion Detector Uses Infrared Light to Measure Brain Metabolism
ANN ARBOR, Mich., Feb. 4, 2020 — A new approach to detecting concussion uses a laser to deliver infrared (IR) light pulses to the brain, where the light interacts with cytochrome C oxidase (CCO), a mitochondrial enzyme important to brain metabolism. CCO is known to decrease when...
Blue Light Can Improve Sleep, Help Brain Recover from Injury
TUCSON, Ariz., Jan. 21, 2020 — According to a University of Arizona (UArizona) study, exposure to blue light in the morning could re-entrain the circadian rhythm and improve sleep problems, leading to faster recovery from brain injury. Research has shown that the brain repairs...
Smartphone App Objectively Assesses Brain Injuries in The Field
SEATTLE, Sept. 8, 2017 — A smartphone app that detects concussion and other traumatic brain injuries could be used to determine whether someone — whether a football player, a soldier in battle, or an elderly person who has fallen — should be further assessed for...
$3.7M Military Contract Supports IR Brain Injury Scanner
PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 2, 2014 — The U.S. Marine Corps and Navy have awarded InfraScan a $3.7 million contract to adapt its handheld IR brain hematoma detector for use on the battlefield. Infrascan already offers a commercial device, the Infrascanner, that can detect the presence...
