QLM Gains $14.5M in Financing, Launches Collaboration with Schlumberger
CARDIFF, Wales, Aug. 5, 2022 — Lidar imaging company QLM Technology closed a £12 million ($14.5 million) series A financing round and signed a collaboration agreement with Schlumberger, an oilfield services company. QLM’s lidar camera is able to monitor, detect, locate, and quantify greenhouse gas emissions. A related version of the product enables remote quantification. The technology is inherently scalable due to low-cost manufacturing at high volume. QLM quantum lidar gas imaging camera visualization and
Photonic Technology Converts Greenhouse Gases into Clean Energy
THE HAGUE, Netherlands, Jan. 25, 2022 — The European consortium SPOTLIGHT is developing a process that uses sunlight and LEDs to turn carbon dioxide and green hydrogen into clean energy products such as methane gas and methanol liquid fuel. Using a photonic device, the SPOTLIGHT...
Gas Mapping LiDAR Quantifies Methane Emissions
BOZEMAN, Mont., Aug. 31, 2021 — Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) signed an agreement for $12 million with high-tech laser company Bridger Photonics. The company will use Bridger’s Gas Mapping Lidar to detect, pinpoint, and quantify methane emissions throughout...
NIST’s Comb Systems Measure All Primary Greenhouse Gases in the Air
GAITHERSBURG, Md., July 7, 2021 — National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) researchers upgraded their laser frequency-comb instrument to simultaneously measure nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and the major air pollutants ozone and carbon monoxide. The NIST...
NIST’s Agricomb Measures Gas Emissions from Cows
GAITHERSBURG, Md., April 14, 2021 — The “agricomb,” an optical frequency comb developed by researchers from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), is able to measure gas emissions from cow eructation and flatulence. The device may as a result aid in the...
Low-Light Cameras, IR Detectors Reveal Secrets of Space
Jul 26, 2019 — Night sky surveying requires that high-performance, low-light cameras be able to detect and measure the faint light signals coming from stars, comets, nebulae, and galaxies. The challenge at the camera level is that parameters must be extremely...
Ultrashort Laser Pulses Make Greenhouse Gas Reactive
BONN, Germany, March 16, 2018 — A highly reactive form of carbon dioxide (CO2, created using ultrashort laser pulses, could help reduce dependence on nonrenewable energy sources. Scientists from the University of Bonn used a so-called iron complex, whose center contained a...
Report: Solar Panels from China Not So Green
EVANSTON, Ill., and LEMONT, Ill., May 30, 2014 — With fewer environmental standards for factories and more electricity generated from non-renewable sources, China’s carbon footprint is about twice as large as Europe’s. This makes China’s manufacturing of energy-saving tools, such...
Ultrasensitive sensor causes stir at show
PRINCETON, N.J. – A prototype laser spectroscopy platform developed by electrical engineers at Princeton University attracted a lot of attention when it was demonstrated during SPIE Photonics West 2010 in January. The sensor, a new development in wireless sensor...
Intersolar Show Size Triples
SAN FRANCISCO, July 17, 2009 -- Today's show is brought to you by the numbers two and three. The Intersolar show just held here tripled in size in a year, expanding from a single floor to an entire convention hall. The number of exhibitors doubled, going from 210 to 437. That...
Australia's Bright Idea: Phase Out Incandescent Bulbs
SYDNEY, Australia, Feb. 20, 2007 -- In an effort to reduce greenhouse gases, the Australian government announced today it will phase out energy-inefficient incandescent light bulbs in favor of compact fluorescents. Australia is aiming to gradually phase out all old-style light...
