Quantum Dot Microscope Can Measure Electric Surface Potentials of Single Atoms
JÜLICH, Germany, June 18, 2019 — A new scanning quantum dot microscopy method can measure the electric potential of a sample at atomic accuracy. It was developed by a team from Forschungszentrum Jülich, working with researchers from two other institutions. The new technique has potential application for chip manufacturing and the characterization of biomolecules. A quantum dot was attached to the tip of an atomic force microscope (AFM) to serve as a noncontact scanning probe. The quantum dot was so small that
Biomicroscopic System Could Yield More Effective Cancer Treatment
DAEGU, South Korea, Jan. 9, 2017 — A converged biomicroscope based on high frequency ultrasound and optical spectroscopy could overcome the challenges of existing imaging systems for tumor analysis and provide physicians with the means to avoid unwanted outcomes such as cancer...
Holographic Technique Uses Deep Learning to Increase Accuracy, Improve Microscopy
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 30, 2017 — Researchers are using deep learning, one of the key technologies behind advances in real-time speech recognition and automated image and video labeling, to reconstruct a hologram to form a microscopic image of an object. This convolutional neural...
OCT System Could Improve Quality Assurance of Complex Car Paints
LIVERPOOL, England, Aug. 10, 2017 — An OCT-based technique could provide a practical solution to managing the number, size and orientation of small metallic flakes in the base coat layer of automotive paint, improving the efficiency of the automotive finishing process. To image the...
Microscopy Technique Images Thick, Multicellular Samples in 3D
CHAMPAIGN, Ill., Aug. 8, 2017 — Gradient light interference microscopy (GLIM), an add-on module to a commercial differential interference contrast (DIC) microscope, provides a novel technique for extracting 3D information from thin and thick unlabeled specimens. Unlike other...
Lasers Illuminate Cancer During Surgery
MUNICH, Germany, Sept. 21, 2011 — A new imaging technique is helping to locate even small groups of cancer cells that surgeons might otherwise overlook during surgery. The technique uses laser light to find cancer cells based on their molecular signatures, and there are plans to...
Images Reveal Details of Viral Assault
Aug 20, 2004 — ARLINGTON, Va., Aug. 20 -- Using a combination of imaging techniques, researchers have determined the mechanics that allow some viruses to invade cells by piercing their outer membranes and digesting their cell walls. The researchers combined their...
