Researchers Report Field Success with Quantum Gravity Gradiometer
BIRMINGHAM, England, March 7, 2022 — Researchers from the UK National Quantum Technology Hub in Sensors and Timing at the University of Birmingham used quantum technology to detect an object hidden below the ground. They said this is the first time a quantum gravity gradiometer has seen practical use outside of laboratory conditions. The gradiometer was developed under a contract for the Ministry of Defence and in the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)-funded Gravity Pioneer project. The researchers used the device to
Ultrafast Optics Faces Challenges Outside of Research Labs
Jul 10, 2017 — Ultrafast optics is currently a scientifically dominated area with a lot of dynamics in both research and development. Often, complex setups make it challenging to create compact devices that can be employed for applications outside of the...
Photonic Chip Holds World Map
GHENT, Belgium, Jan. 13, 2010 -- Using high-resolution optical lithography techniques important in microelectronics fabrication, researchers in Belgium produced a terascale world map with a circumference of only 40 µm, or about half the width of a human hair.
Lasers to Map Mayan Ruins
ORLANDO, Fla., May 23, 2008 -- Archaeology -- often slow-paced, precise work unless your name is Indiana Jones -- is going high tech, with lasers set to unlock the secrets of the Maya civilization hidden by dense forest canopy. A University of Central Florida (UCF) study under...
No Hairs Were Harmed in This Experiment
May 7, 2004 — CHESTNUT HILL, Mass., May 7 -- Researchers have demonstrated the fabrication of microscopic polymeric structures on top of a human hair, without harming it. Boston College chemistry professor John T. Fourkas, in collaboration with Boston College...
