Stealth Sheet Conceals Hot Objects from IR
MADISON, Wis., June 27, 2018 — An ultrathin cloaking material has been developed that can hide hot objects, such as human bodies and military vehicles, from IR cameras. The new “stealth sheet” is <1 m thick and absorbs approximately 94 percent of the IR light it encounters, making hot objects beneath the cloaking material almost completely invisible to IR detectors. To make the stealth material capable of absorbing light in the MIR and LWIR range — the wavelength emitted by objects that are the
Pulsed Laser Irradiation Enhances Nanoplate Properties
KUMAMOTO, Japan, Nov. 29, 2017 — When gold-coated silver nanoplates are irradiated with a pulsed laser, they release silver ions which are known to produce a strong antibacterial effect. Researchers observed that silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) — known to have antibacterial...
Sunlight, Nanoparticles Break Down Pollutants
WEST BENGAL, India, Nov. 6, 2014 — A class of pollutants that negatively affect hormones can be broken down using nanoparticles and sunlight. Researchers from the Center for Advanced Materials at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science developed the method, which...
Laser Technique Diagnoses Meningitis
GLASGOW, Scotland, Feb. 14, 2014 — A new laser-based test uses nanoparticles to speed up the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial meningitis, a disease that can lead to blood poisoning and brain damage if not discovered quickly.
SERS Susses Out Salmonella
ATHENS, Ga., April 11, 2012 — In the future, even the smallest traces of salmonella and other foodborne pathogens may be easily detected using a technology known as surface-enhanced Raman scattering, or SERS.
LCD TV Waste May Prevent Infections
YORK, England, June 23, 2010 — The fastest growing waste in the EU could soon be helping to combat hospital infections, according to scientists at the University of York in England. The latest developments from the York Green Chemistry Center of Excellence and the York Liquid...
Minicircuit-Making Process Developed
DÜBENDORF, Switzerland, June 24, 2010 — Organic semiconductors are very promising candidates as starting materials for the manufacture of cheap, large area and flexible electronic components such as transistors, diodes and sensors on a scale ranging from micro to nano. A condition for...
