Optics Tools Advance in New Forms with Space Exploration
Jul 12, 2018 — With a new generation of large telescopes comes new challenges for optics. Some mirrors, for instance, must be large but flexible to perform wavefront correction and make the images as clear as possible. The shape of future optics will be different...
ESO’s VLT Becomes Single Telescope
PARANAL, Chile, March 6, 2018 — With the first light of the ESPRESSO spectrograph using the four-unit telescope mode of the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO’s) Very Large Telescope (VLT), the device has become a single giant telescope. After extensive preparations...
Schott Casts First Mirror Segments for ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope
MAINZ, Germany, Feb. 23, 2018 — The first six hexagonal segments for the main mirror of the European Southern Observatory's (ESO’s) Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) have been successfully cast by glass manufacturer Schott AG. The segments will form parts of the ELT's 39-m...
Schott Casts First Segments for ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope
MAINZ, Germany, Jan. 31, 2018 — The first six hexagonal segments for the main mirror of the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO’s) Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) have been successfully cast by glass manufacturer Schott AG at its facility in Mainz. The segments will...
Toptica Provides Lasers for Telescope's Adaptive Optics System
GARCHING, Germany, Jan. 10, 2018 — The European Southern Observatory (ESO) has signed an agreement with Toptica Photonics AG for the production of lasers to be used in the observatory’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) adaptive optics system. Toptica, in partnership with MPB...
European Southern Observatory Tests Spectroscope for High-Quality Imaging
ANTOFAGASTA, Chile, Aug. 22, 2017 — The Adaptive Optics Facility (AOF) on the European Southern Observatory (ESO) tested instruments for Unit Telescope 4 (UT4) as part of its Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) for high-quality imaging of celestial objects. The AOF is a long-term...
ESO Signs Ten-Year Agreement with Australia
CANBERRA, Australia, July 26, 2017 — The European Southern Observatory (ESO) has signed a ten-year strategic alliance with the Australian government to give Australian astronomers and industry access to the La Silla Paranal Observatory in Chile. As part of the agreement, Australia will...
Construction Begins on ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope
PARANAL, Chile, June 21, 2017 — Construction has begun on the world's largest optical and IR telescope, the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), at the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Built by ESO and supported by the UK's Science and Technology Facilities Council, the ELT is an...
ESO Signs Contracts with Schott, Safran for Extremely Large Telescope Mirrors
PARANAL, Chile, June 16, 2017 — The European Southern Observatory (ESO) has signed contracts with Schott and Safran Electronics & Defense to manufacture mirrors for its Extremely Large Telescope. The optical system of ESO's Extremely Large Telescope consists of five mirrors,...
ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope Casts Secondary Mirror of 4.2 Meters
GARCHING, Germany, June 7, 2017 — The European Southern Observatory’s (ESO’s) 39-m Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) has reached a new milestone with the casting of the telescope's secondary mirror (M2), which is larger than the primary mirror of many of today's research...
Sener to Provide Mirrors for European Extremely Large Telescope
MADRID, Jan. 24, 2017 — Private engineering and technology group Sener has signed a contract with the European Southern Observatory (ESO) for the design and production of cells for the M2 and M3 secondary and tertiary mirrors of the European Extremely Large Telescope...
Very Large Telescope Reveals Low-Mass Bodies in Orion Nebula
ANTOFAGASTA, Chile, July 20, 2016 — The HAWK-I IR instrument on the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT) has been used to produce the deepest and most comprehensive view of the Orion Nebula to date. The striking images reveals an abundance of faint brown...
Laser Guide Star System Installed at Very Large Telescope in Chile
MUNICH, May 22, 2015 — The first of four laser guide star systems developed by Toptica Photonics AG of Germany and MPB Communications Inc. of Canada has been installed and brought online at the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile. Previous...
Big Photonics Advances Build and Power Big Telescopes
Nov 1, 2013 — Bigger aspheric mirrors enable astronomers to see farther into space – but they require special designs. For astronomers, bigger is better: In general, the scientific value of a telescope scales to the fourth power of its diameter. So,...
Lasers Find Varied Uses in Space Applications
Nov 1, 2012 — From the first laser fired on another planet to observatory guide stars and space collision avoidance systems, lasers in space are making news with numerous advances and universal firsts (as far as we know). With the beginning of the Laser Lunar...
Storage Keeps Pace with Data from Space
Nov 1, 2012 — As imaging technology improves, space researchers are accumulating incredible amounts of image data – all of which must be transmitted and stored for analysis. There are few fields in which the challenge of image storage and analysis is more...
Telescopes Require Polishing to Perfection
Nov 1, 2012 — As astronomy projects look deeper into space, polishing the optics becomes more and more critical. This past summer, there was a go-ahead to go big. The European Southern Observatory member states declared support for the billion-plus-euro ($1.3...
Laser rulers join the planet hunt
GARCHING, Germany – Astronomers searching for extrasolar planets may be a step closer to finding other Earth-like places in the universe around sunlike stars, thanks to a new tool that promises to increase the accuracy of planet-hunting devices by tenfold. Scientists...
