spatial light modulators News
Team Develops Largest-of-Its-Kind Quantum Simulator
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., July 14, 2021 — A team of physicists from the Harvard-MIT Center for Ultracold Atoms and other universities has developed a special type of quantum computer known as a programmable quantum simulator capable of operating with 256 quantum bits, or “qubits.” According to lead author Sepehr Ebadi, a graduate student at Harvard University, it is the combination of the system’s unprecedented size and programmability that puts it at the cutting edge of the race for a quantum computer. The
Holographic Display Improvements Enhance AR, VR
STANFORD, Calif., Jan. 29, 2021 — Stanford University researchers have developed an approach to improve the image quality and contrast of holographic displays. The technology, as a result, may help to improve near-eye displays for virtual and augmented reality applications. The...
Electrode-Water Interface Produces Giant Pockels Effect for a ‘Liquid’ Light Modulator
TOKYO, Nov. 25, 2019 — A new type of light modulator could lead to a better understanding of how the Pockels effect occurs in different types of materials, making it possible to more fully explore its potential in optical applications. A team of scientists at the Tokyo...
Optical Metrology Techniques Harness Structured Light Beams
Jan 31, 2017 — As a result of technological advances in recent years, researchers have at their disposal devices capable of tailoring — with almost unlimited freedom — the shape of beams of light. Computer-controlled spatial light modulators (SLMs) and...
Femtosecond Lasers Power New Approaches in Optogenetics
Oct 4, 2016 — One of the most active and exciting areas in neuroscience is the use of optogenetics to unravel how neural pathways in the brain process and transmit information. Optogenetics involves the use of light-sensitive opsins — a special class of...
NASA Patents Offer Potential Advances
Mar 18, 2004 — HOUSTON, March 18 -- An optical network innovation is among new patents developed at NASA's Johnson Space Center that are now available for licensing by private companies. Also up for grabs are methods to help advance human cell growth, kill...
Optical Storage Goes 3-D
Apr 1, 2003 — Thanks to the spot size of the blue diode laser and the recent advances in spatial light modulators, holographic data storage is finally practical. However, the ability to write and read such information is meaningless without something on which one...
