All-Optical Switching Promises THz Hard Drives
AMES, Iowa, April 5, 2013 — Magnetic memory technology could become at least 1000 times faster with an ultrashort laser pulse technique that switches magnetism — a method used to encode information in hard drives, magnetic random access memory and other computing devices. The discovery could pave the way for terahertz hard drives, an international study has found.
Photonics Researchers Among Young Investigator Recipients
ARLINGTON, Va., April 4, 2013 — Five photonics researchers working in areas from nonlinear materials to undersea wireless optical communications to solar power are among the 16 recipients of Young Investigator awards, given by the Office of Naval Research and announced by the...
Telerobotics Treats Bladder Cancer Better
NASHVILLE, Tenn., and NEW YORK, April 5, 2013 — Removing tumors from the lining of the bladder, a procedure called transurethral resection, could become more tolerable for the patient and easier for the surgeon using a telerobotic platform that is under development.
Camera Captures 3-D Images from 1 km Away
EDINBURGH, Scotland, April 4, 2013 — A time-of-flight imaging system can now gather high-resolution 3-D information from up to a kilometer away from an object that typically is very difficult to image.
Optics Community Hails Obama’s Brain Mapping Initiative
WASHINGTON, April 4, 2013 — Neuroscientists and bioengineers — including the inventor of a neuronal control technique involving gene therapy and lasers — voiced support this week for the BRAIN Initiative, unveiled by President Barack Obama at a White House press conference on...
Imaging Tech Could Lower Heart Disease Deaths
LOGAN, Utah, April 3, 2013 — Patients undergoing angioplasty or other heart-related medical procedures could benefit from a new optical imaging technology that creates detailed images of coronary artery walls in vivo.
Quantum Code Sent from Aircraft to Ground Station
MUNICH, April 3, 2013 — The first secure quantum code transmitted using quantum cryptography from a plane in flight to a ground station has provided an important step toward creating a secure laser-based global communications network.
Rogers Honored by MRS for Flexible Electronics Work
WARRENDALE, Pa., April 2, 2013 — John A. Rogers, the director of the Seitz Materials Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will receive the 2013 Mid-Career Researcher Award for his contributions to developing flexible electronic systems.
Solid-State Qubit Photon Logic Gate Realized
COLLEGE PARK, Md., April 2, 2013 — A solid-state qubit photon logic gate could harness the quantum nature of light and semiconductors, expanding the capabilities of computers in extraordinary ways.
Atoms Hollowed by Laser Form Novel Plasma
YORK, England, April 1, 2013 — A highly unusual plasma composed of hollow atoms has been created using one of the world’s most powerful lasers. The surprising result shows that a little-explored region of physics is now accessible through the unprecedented intensities being...
Eyeglasses inspire blind-spot-free car mirror
DAEJEON, South Korea, and PORTLAND, Ore. – Progressive adaptive optics technology used in bi- and trifocal vision correction has been applied to a prototype automobile side mirror that has no blind spot and that does not distort images. In North America, only passenger-side mirrors can have...
Fiber lasers for particle acceleration technologies
SOUTHAMPTON, England – A novel laser system combining the output of thousands of pulsed fiber lasers could be the solution to two main issues affecting current laser particle acceleration technologies: efficiency and repetition rates. Scientists from the Optoelectronics...
Gold nanoparticles boost QD glow
GAITHERSBURG, Md. – A DNA template that controls the distance between gold nanoparticles and quantum dots can predictably increase or decrease the intensity of a quantum dot’s fluorescence. The breakthrough could lead to the use of quantum dots as a component in...
Laser plasma process could advance optoelectronic materials
MONTREAL – A novel nanohybrid structure synthesized using a pulsed laser ablation technique could yield a new generation of optoelectronic switches, fast photodetectors and third-generation solar devices. Research on the photoelectronic properties of...
Nanotubes on a chip simplify optical power measurements
GAITHERSBURG, Md. – A chip-scale instrument made of carbon nanotubes may simplify absolute measurements of laser power, especially the light signals transmitted by optical fibers in telecommunication networks. A prototype device developed at the National Institute of...
On-chip detector reliably finds single photons
KARLSRUHE, Germany – Single photons can be reliably detected for data transmission and quantum computing by integrating detectors with nanophotonic chips, an international team has discovered. Ultrafast, efficient and reliable single-photon detectors suitable for...
Optical fibers may transport quantum information
INNSBRUCK, Austria – Optical fibers, which transport data around the world, now may be able to carry quantum information, according to new research. Rainer Blatt and Tracy Northup of the University of Innsbruck have directly transferred the quantum information stored in...
Rare mineral yields light-emitting nano triangles
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – A rare mineral formed into single sheets produces triangular structures with unusual light-emitting properties that could be used in optical technologies such as light detectors or lasers. Creating single, one-atom-thick layers, or monolayers, is of...
Silica’s compatibility broadens through self-assembly
SYDNEY and PARIS – Silica, a rugged compound with unbeatable optical transparency over long distances, is about as easy to combine with other materials as oil is with water. But a novel manufacturing technique transforms this underused cousin of optical fiber into...
Solar Cells Derived from Trees
ATLANTA, April 1, 2013 — Just as leaves capture sunlight and convert it to energy, so do solar cells, and now recyclable, sustainable and renewable photovoltaics can be made using natural substrates derived from trees.
Supernanograting enables spectrometer sensor
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Combining nanophotonics technology with traditional optical spectroscopy has yielded a new kind of optical spectrometer with sensing and spectral measurement functions. Traditional optical spectrometers measure the spectra of light; traditional...
Collaboration Makes Easily Manufactured Optical Metamaterials
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., March 29, 2013 — Controlling the optics of metamaterials involves using complicated structures that are difficult to manufacture in large numbers and at small sizes at optical wavelengths. However, engineers are collaborating to change that with a nanonotch,...
