A Limit to Nanotechnology Mass Production?

CAMBRIDGE, England, May 5, 2011 — In a bold statement that raised questions about a billion-dollar industry, Mike Kelly, professor and nanotechnology scientist at the Center for Advanced Photonics and Electronics at the University of Cambridge, said that structures with a diameter of 3 nm or less cannot be mass produced using a top-down approach. This statement, which appears in a paper published in the Institute of Physics' journal Nanotechnology, raises a major question concerning the billions of dollars that are poured into nanotechnology each year in the hope that the latest technology developed in the lab can make...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    nanotechnology
The use of atoms, molecules and molecular-scale structures to enhance existing technology and develop new materials and devices. The goal of this technology is to manipulate atomic and molecular particles to create devices that are thousands of times smaller and faster than those of the current microtechnologies.
